Shock Totem Publications is very happy to announce the upcoming paperback/digital release of James Newman’s brand-new novel, Ugly As Sin.
Cover art for Thunderstorm Books’ sold-out limited edition hardcover.
Nick Bullman was a wrestling superstar. His alter ego, The Widowmaker, was the monster heel all the marks loved to hate.
But then an encounter with two psychotic fans left his face horribly disfigured. Now, to most, he’s just a monster.
Yanked from the spotlight and thrust into the shadows, these days Nick lives the quiet life of an average Joe. He’s angry. He’s alone. And he likes it just fine that way…
Until he receives a desperate phone call from a young lady he barely knows—his daughter.
For the first time in over thirty years, Nick returns to his hometown of Midnight, North Carolina. There he will come face to face with old demons, forge new friendships, and make enemies far more dangerous than those who ruined his face, all in a quest to save the granddaughter he’s never met…and maybe find a little bit of redemption along the way.
Ugly As Sin is an electrifying tale of “white-trash noir,” a taut page-turner that skates the razor edge of a familiar, horrifying reality. At times heartbreaking, funny, and terrifyingly suspenseful, Ugly As Sin may be Newman’s best work to date.
Praise for Ugly As Sin:
“Ugly As Sin is James Newman’s best book yet! I loved every brutal, violent, pulpy page, and I recommend the hell out of it!” —Jeff Strand, author of Dead Clown Barbecue, Faint of Heart, and Gleefully Macabre Tales
“Ugly As Sin is brutal, fast-paced, grimy fun, a compulsive page-turner with characters you’ll be deeply invested in by story’s end.” —Blu Gilliand, The October Country
“James Newman is one of my favorite authors. His novels are always engrossing and entertaining. I can’t recommend his works highly enough.” —John R. Little, author of Miranda, The Memory Tree, and Ursa Major
The paperback/digital editions of Ugly As Sin will feature exclusive artwork and bonus material. Look for it this coming December.
Shock Totem Publications is pleased to announce that our first non-magazine release, James Newman’s fantastic ode to 1980s horror, The Wicked, is now available for purchase.

James Newman…a Southern Gentlemen who gave us the novels Midnight Rain and The Wicked, as well as such novellas as the co-authored Night of the Loving Dead, with James Futch, and Holy Rollers. And his latest novel, Animosity, was just released through Necessary Evil Press.
Newman was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to sit and chew the fat with me…
JB: James, we’ve known each other a few years, met up—where was it, the old Horror Channel board? I don’t recall, do you?
JN: I think that’s right. Of course, I can barely remember what I did last week, half the time. I used to think it was because I’d smoked too much weed back in the day. Now I know it’s just ’cause I’m getting old.
Seriously, though, thanks for asking me to do this. It’s always a pleasure talking to you, John.
Shock Totem Publications is pleased to announce our first non-magazine release. On May 1, 2012, we will re-release in paperback James Newman’s second novel and ode to 1980s horror, The Wicked.
Originally published in 2007 in limited edition hardcover, The Wicked has been revised by the author, expanded with a new foreword by Mark Allan Gunnells, a new afterword by the author, and brilliant new artwork and illustrations by Jesse David Young (with additional cover layout by Yannick Bouchard). Also included is a brand new, exclusive tie-in short story written specifically for this release.

James Newman is the author of the critically-acclaimed Midnight Rain and Animosity, the short-story collection People Are Strange, and the novellas The Forum, Revenge Flick! and Olden.
And we’re extremely proud to officially welcome him into the Shock Totem family!
Praise for The Wicked
“The Wicked is a good old-fashioned, unabashed Horror novel. James Newman remembers when horror used to be fun, and he’s recaptured it here in all of its gory glory. A terrifying page-turner in the tradition of Graham Masterton, J.N. Williamson, and Richard Laymon. WICKEDly good reading from one of horror’s new heirs!”
Author of The Rising, City of the Dead and Ghoul
“Demons, depravity and despair, oh my! Reminiscent of the best of 80’s horror and Bentley Little at his most grotesque and unrelenting, The Wicked is the kind of horror we don’t see enough of anymore. This is one wild and bloody ride, and in the capable hands of James Newman, it’s one worth taking.”
—Kealan Patrick Burke
Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Turtle Boy and Kin
The Wicked will be released in paperback and e-book formats. More details will follow closer to release. If you have any questions, please let us know.>
James Newman, whom we first interviewed in issue #2, has been giving us the dark side of humanity for years. Through the characters of his novels and stories. He knows how to take everyday folks and everyday scenarios and skew them into something disturbing and dark. Be it the story of a young boy’s fraying tether to his youth in Midnight Rain, or the populace of his collection People Are Strange, with Newman…you never quite get what you think he’s offering: This writer’s hand often extends with a palm full of candy—candy that turns to worms and razors when you take it. I cannot think of any finer praise for his work than that.
His latest novel, Animosity, promises to leave all the others in the dust. It is a harrowing and intense book. I was fortunate enough to get an early copy and read it in days. Amazing and honest. Absorbing. I could keep listing adjectives but I won’t. It’s a great book, and as soon as it becomes available to the public, grab it. It is ready to be pre-ordered, in limited/signed hardcover edition here, Necessary Evil Press.
Here is the book trailer for Newman’s Animosity.
